What Hymn To Sing At Wedding?
Filed in Category - What is that Hymn?

I am not a huge fan of wedding readers or soloists, because the bride and groom just stand there awkwardly. I have seen too many weddings where I didn’t like this practice. So, I would like to have all my guests stand together and sing a hymn. It has to be easy to sing, preferably something that many people would already know, but not too common. Themes of togetherness, new beginnings, love, family, etc. are all acceptable. Any ideas?

If your guest are members of your church, you should check in your Hymnal, in the Holy Matrimony section, for an appropriate and familiar hymn. If they are not regular church goers, perhaps the best known and most appropriate hymn would be “Blest be the tie that binds.”
If your singers might be more adventurous, “Joyful Joyful, we adore thee” (Ode to Joy) or “Love Divine, all loves excelling.”

I LOVE this idea. I’ve never seen it done, but it would be absolutely amazing in my opinion.
My favorite is “O Perfect Love” which was written for a wedding. You can read the story at http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/o/p/operf…
O perfect Love, all human thought transcending,
Lowly we kneel in prayer before Thy throne,
That theirs may be the love which knows no ending,
Whom Thou forevermore dost join in one.
O perfect Life, be Thou their full assurance,
Of tender charity and steadfast faith,
Of patient hope and quiet, brave endurance,
With childlike trust that fears nor pain nor death.
    Grant them the joy which brightens earthly sorrow;
Grant them the peace which calms all earthly strife,
And to life’s day the glorious unknown morrow
That dawns upon eternal love and life.
Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving,
Through Jesus Christ, Thy coeternal Word,
Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living
Now and to endless ages art adored.
(You would need someone to lead the hymn, and probably have the words in a program or song sheet if there are no hymnals in the church.)
I do see your point about the bride and groom standing there awkwardly. However, I saw one wedding where the minister was praying quietly with the bride and groom at the kneeler while a soloist sang a quiet song. That was very moving and wasn’t awkward at all.
