What are your favorite songs from the old hymnals?
Please don’t list songs written in the last ten years – or the last thirty years for that matter.
Please don’t list songs that involve drums or electric guitars or commercials on TV with whole megachurches singing them.
I mean the old time stuff. The stuff your grandma knew by heart. The stuff that only sounds right with an organ introduction (or piano, but you know what I mean).
I’ll get you started. . .
Amazing Grace
Closer Walk With Thee
Angels, From the Realms of Glory
Please, keep up the list. . .

“POD TVOJU POKROV” – “We hasten to your patronage” in Old Slavonic. Hey it’s a staple in Byzantine Catholicism.

well, I’m sorry…but even thought my grandma is 74, her favorite gospel singer of all time was Elvis…and her and my favorite song is “How great thou art” and only Elvis and my church can sing it the way I like to hear it.
i like The Summons and Jesus Christ is Risen Today
Not sure about hymns, but Imagine by John Lennon is a great song
“My Faith Looks Up To Thee”
“He Leadeth Me”
“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
shall we gather at the river.
I used to like this song when I was a kid:
“Though the mountains may fall, and the hills turn to dust…..”
There is a file of it here if you’d like to listen:http://youtube.com/watch?v=uELUwdQa2d0
Built on the Rock, the Church Doth Stand
Crown Him with Many Crowns
Thy Strong Word
Rock of Ages
Oh and I have to add, Beautiful Savior
Nearer My God To Thee
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
How Great Thou Art
some of the old Christmas hymns
the rest of the ones I like are too current for your tastes, apparently. (Canticle of the Sun, You are Near, Eagles’ Wings, etc.)
