We are working on an Easter Passion play at my church and we need some good crucifixion songs. I would prefer to avoid hymns. Needs to be easily understandable (a lot of older people attend my church). Any suggestions?

How Great Thou Art.
And when I think, that God, his son not sparing
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin.
Not so modern but very powerful.

I assume you are looking for songs to be presented, not sung by the congregation. I am really impressed with the recent composition “I see his blood upon the rose,” which I often use for Palm Sunday, published by GIA.

Depending what you mean by modern, A Moravian anthem from the early 20th century, “Behold a sight” by Simon Peter, is very good. It can be a solo or 4-part. (I’m not sure who publishes it.)
Of course, oldies can be goodies. If you have accomplished singers, Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus,” (you can supply a translation, or there are both easier versions, and versions in English) or Lotti’s “Surely he hath borne our grief” are useful. Elgar also has an “Ave Verum Corpus” which is very interesting.
