Yes, I miss the beautiful hymns and feel the modern choruses can’t compare to the depth of meaning and beautiful music of the older hymns.
Saying that though, I know that this would not be hard to find if I lived in a different part of the USA. Up in the Northeast it’s hard enough to find a good church. Puting the criterior on it that the music be the same as 30/40 years back would be impossible.
There are sites on the internet where the hymns you’re referring to can be heard again. I’ll post a few links, enjoy & be blessed. Make sure your speakers are turned on your computer:http://newsongonline.org/midi-hymns.htmlhttp://rosemck1.tripod.com/southern-gosp…http://www.smickandsmodoo.com/church/chu…http://rosemck1.tripod.com/jukebox-gospe…

Our Bishop is still an old time Preacher, would God that I could be 1/2 The Man of God that he is ! Yes, I do miss the great old Hymns of the Church. Nothing against modern Praise & Worship, but there is a sacridness of the old Hymns:
    Great is Thy Faithfulness !
    Amazing Grace.
A Mighty Fortress is Our God !
All Hail The Power of Jesus Name.
    Faith of our Fathers.
There are so many, too many to name, these are the voices of Worship of our Fathers, of generations of Christians who went befor us.

I will be 61 The 24th of this month and yes I do miss the old hymns. I do like some of the new songs. I don’t even know if you could call the new songs hymns. Many of the new songs don’t have easy catchy words and tunes. Many of today’s songs I think are best sung by their writer and no one else.
When it comes to preaching. There weren’t a zillion and one get rich by seed faith tithing into our ministry like there is today. In the older times many years ago there was more of the hell. fire and brimstone sermons.
Now in between those two groups there are now those who have studied the Bible in college and have gone to the Holy Land and preachers who have study groups with each other to learn how to best preach to the people so they can win souls for Christ. They know the Greek and Hebrew and can better express the scriptures to us. They don’t just teach that God will send us to hell but that he loves us and did from before the foundation of the world. They teach us that God does not want any of us to perish but that he wants all to come to know and except his son as there personal Savior.
The churches do need money to pay the bills with, so give to your church and if there is a TV ministry you like and would like to help with their expenses then give only what you can afford to give and no more. If they start to hound you for money, then it is time to say no for you have your church and your own family. There are millions of people out there in TV Land that can and will help them. Don’t let them break you financially.

I’m not older, but I do miss the hymns. I wish my church would sing at least one hymn every Sunday. The only “hymn” we sing is part of the Doxology.
I like the preaching better, though. My pastor is U.S. Air Force, and he is AWESOME.

I go to a traditional church with the old hymns and preaching that is not necessarily ‘feel good’ messages. I wouldnt feel comfortable in any other type of church.

  10. Anonymous on January 18, 2010 11:07 pm

Yes, I miss them very much. Preaching? It has changed – odd, though, that what God expects of us hasn’t.

  11. arklatex on January 18, 2010 11:07 pm

No, I don’t miss it because my church still does it that way! We sing out of one of the old shape-note hymnbooks “Heavenly Highway Hymns”, though soloists and ensembles doings specials occasionally use more contemporary music.
Our preacher, though very young (24) is from a very traditional conservative background common to our denomination, ABA Baptist.
I have been both a member and a visitor at more modern churches, and I must say I prefer it the old way–maybe it’s because it’s how I was brought up and it’s what I’m used to, but I think it’s also because the contemporary worship is often watered-down and too touchy-feely for fear of stepping on toes. I think having your toes stepped on (as in being challenged toward spiritual growth) is one of the reasons for attending church, so I would definitely miss it and probably stagnate in my Christian walk if I didn’t have that old-time preaching!
P.S. My husband calls the contemporary Christian praise music “7-11″ songs because you sing the same seven words eleven times. I must admit he’s not far wrong, and though many of the songs are Scriptural and pretty, they are missing some of the beautiful poetry and harmony of the old-time hymns. I think they are probably most easily appreciated by those who didn’t grow up with the other because they are so easy to catch on to and sing along.

In our church we keep the same hymns in our hymnals. In fact I think it has been ten or so years since the last time the Church updated the hymnals. Sometimes there are new songs I would like added into the book but I am glad that they keep the old favourites. Of course some songs have been left out from the original hymnal like the greats – Come thou fount, and Amazing Grace because of legal and copyright issues, which I wish could reenter but most of our songs are the same songs written back in the mid1800s, with a few more modern ones.

  13. Depoetic on January 18, 2010 11:25 pm

Our church has three morning services –
At 8:25 AM (When I attend) they have the Gospel Music service. This includes Hymns popular in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.
At the 9:40 AM service – they have the Contemporary Christian Worship Music Service.
At 11:00 AM they have the traditional Service with Hymns that were popular in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.
My Pastor is dynamic – and an excellent expositor of the Word – and it can only be God that gives him the strength to preach three sermons each Sunday!
    Peace.

I get tired of the fad preaching, and think we need to go back to serious Bible commentary-type preaching where the speaker takes a passage from either Testament and examines it in detail to see what it **really** says, not what he wants it to say! I am most impressed by those who can find passages from *both* Testaments that support each other, not just a verse here and there, taken out of context.
When I do my personal Bible study, I ask myself three questions: What must I do? (What must I learn, avoid, do, practice, or cultivate?) Then, if I do that, What can/will God do (or be unable to do if I don’t do my part?) And finally, Now what? What does it mean in practice?
As for hymns, yes, I miss the old songs. I now live in S. Europe and we don’t have many of the old southern hymns I love like “I’ll fly Away” or “What Wondrous Love”. They just don’t work in translation. But they had such good messages. A lot of churches here use choruses based on Scripture verses, though–which is good.

Yes I miss most of the old ways, but not all of them. I love the older music and some of the new stuff, some. but mostly it is so loud as to hurt the ears and you cant enjoy even the good stuff. I am no old foagie that minds the volume up, but when it makes ppls ears ring, its too loud. I like the idea of singing to God ,instead of about God, thats newer and awesome.
In the old, there is much I dont like tho, like when they sing how hopeless of a sinner they still are. Thats not truth. We are of a new nature, the nature of Christ, once born again, with His nature, a new nature that is to overcome sin just as Jesus Christ did Himself. We cant do it without God or the HOly SPirit and we can only have that because of the shed blood of Jesus Christ on Calvary, but we can do it once born again< THRU HIM. LEts sing the victory songs and not defeat. But, do I miss those songs that so honored God, oh yes I do. And even tho I have enjoyed much contemporary music over the years, I find I am starting to dislike much of it now, as they play it too rock and roll like now, not like 15 years ago, and its too loud, often the instruments are louder than the singers voices, so you cant even hear the words. The words have the messsage, and we need to hear them.
So we find we are changing, my husband and myself, and desiring it to be more like the good old days. Not only in music, but in sermons. All of this new age bullonie is creeping into most churches, so occultish, and seeker friendly. That does not honor God.
We need to hear only what God says in His precious Holy Word and then do it. God commands us to obey the word, not just hear it and we can by the shed blood of Jesus, thru the HOly Spirit. LEts speak victory and lets sing victory, but lets get it all in. PPl only want to hear how God loves them , get their warm fuzzy, go home, and live just like they did before chruch. The truths of God are to lead to change, a transformed life and mind. and the Spirit is to bring us into Gods will for our lives, to obey what we know to obey, as we seek to know God more and more and more, only desiring to what all God calls us to do for Him. If we dont have a changed life, what do we have to bring to someone else??
This old anything goes, grace got it ALL covered, is all a lie of the devil, just like the lie in the garden.
God commands we live like Jesus and be sinless.
Grace is to empower us to overcome sin, not to cover it up, and live just like the world does and count on grace. Yes we need grace, to overcome, not to COVER UP. God wants nothing hidden, nothing broken and needing to be fixed.
God wants our sins uncovered, so HE can heal us and deliver us from them, and move us on to a deepr knowledge and love for Him. Sometimes I think if I hear one more seeker friendly message I will literally go up and grab the mike and start yelling. Havent gone that far yet, but almost.
I do speak to the pastor, after church, and I pray continually from Him to know and receive truth and lets get back to the word of God, without all the man made stuff in it, yet be careful what we label as man made or just mere tradiation. Some things of God are now getting tossed aside, and labelled man made or tradition, that arent.
Lets stayin prayer. Loved your question. God bless you.

When I go to my Mom’s church in Paradise, California, I attend the Traditional service in which they play nothing BUT old time hyms, though they project the words, no more hymnals! I enjoy it, and am always thrilled at how the words come back without my needing to look at them!
However, I ALSO LOVE the services today in my church, as the newer songs are very different but FULL of meaning!
    Like this one for instance>>
    Keeper of the stars
    Lord of time and space
    I will live my life
    Lifting up Your name
    Lover of my heart
    God who came to save
    Thank You for the Cross
    And the life you Gave
    Wonderful
    Powerful
    Jesus is your Name
    -Chorus-
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    You are the everlasting God
    Author of my life
    Friend of sinful man
    Holy, mighty God
    Ever great ‘I Am’
    You’re so wonderful
    Powerful
    Jesus is your name
    -Chorus 2x-
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    You are the everlasting God
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    My lord, beautiful you are
I love to sing your name
I love to sing your name
I love to sing your name
I worship and adore You God
I love to sing your name (hallelujah Jesus)
I love to sing your name (hallelujah Jesus)
I love to sing your name (hallelujah Jesus)
I worship You with all my heart
    Wonderful
    Powerful
    Jesus is your name
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    You are the everlasting God
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
    Hallelujah Jesus
My Lord how beautiful you are
As for the preaching?! I get SO much out of the messages today as they are not THEME sermons, but straight from the word of God all the time. LOVE IT!

We can all be jumpin’ and jivin’ cause the music sounds
cool and as the song brings home the message of the cross were thinking to much about how the song sounds.
I love hymns, our church brings the worlds of contemporary and hymns together in a great way. But I still hate the way my younger friends can sing their heart out on I Surrender, but only mumble I Surrender All because it’s a hymn.

  19. . on January 19, 2010 1:46 am

I’m 37. Lots of churches still use hymns. I love them. Holy, Holy, Holy has been in my head for 24 hours now. Yes, I miss them when I am at a congregation that won’t sing them. I miss them a lot.
