Learning To Sing With No Teacher… Is It A Good Idea?

Filed in Category - Learn To Sing Hymns

I really love singing and want to learn but i’m booked with theater stuff. I have a friend and we’re planing on going to district competition and singing Stepsisters’ Lament from Cinderelia. The problem is she’s in musical theater and i’m not so she’s getting the training. I know i can sing because i can sing what i write, but i have trouble when it comes to someone elses song. So i can’t get a teacher but have the will to sing, i have a song but no previous training. What can i do to not let me or my partner down? And i can’t get a lot of the computer software because i don’t have a window computer.

I don’t think that it is a good idea to learn to sing on your own. Unlike instruments like a guitar or violin, if you break your instrument, you may end up having to spend days without talking. Since you mentioned that you have a lot of theater stuff, I’m guessing that not talking would not be a good outcome.
Most of the things voice teachers teach isn’t just hitting notes, it’s how to hit the notes. Breathing techniques are the first thing voice teachers teach new students. The way the air passes through the vocal cords affects the tone. Since your partner is getting some training, she should be able to teach you breathing exercises.
For the upcoming competition, I’d work on breathing. I know it sounds odd, but it is really important. Ask your friend to listen to you to see where you might need some help.

I’m not throuroughlly sure. but i think you can teach yourself if you have the patience and time to do it. I mean it really isnt that hard. you need to buy music sheet for the types of songs that you have to sing and follow the notes. it will be less costlys than hiring a music teacher, esp. when the chances of getting someone who fits your personality are so slim.

It is good to some extent.
Learning to sing by yourself gives you more space and chances to explore music. It also enhances originality in the music that you produce.
However, without a teacher, u cannot be sure that you are using the correct techniques and way of singing. This can lead to damage in your vocal cords and poor expression of songs, which in other words, is the injustice to music pieces.

While you could learn to sing without the use of a teacher, I wouldn’t recommend it. I am not a singer myself, but I am a Horn player and, in my experience, those who try to train themselves without professional assistance usually develop very poor habits and practices. However, in your specific case, a simple method book should be enough to learn what you need. You could find one at your local sheet music store or go to http://www.activemusician.com/Choral-Lessons–c156. Those books should show you basics of reading music and proper singing techniques. I hope that helps.
