Comment posted Lds (mormon) What Is Your Favorite Hymn And Why? by Mormon Duck, The Anti-Nephi-Lehi.
Mine is ‘Abide with Me; Tis Eventide.’ When I hear it, I think of a scene from “Other Side of Heaven.” This guy brings his son to the missionaries after he falls out of a tree and hits his head. They bless him and pray over him and after several days, the boy is fine.
When they were talking about the scene during a behind the scenes part, they said that they tears the father sheds were NOT fake. After the cut, they had a word with the make up department about the amount of fake tears they used, they told the director that they hadn’t used any.

My favourite is #29 A Poor Wayfaring Man Of Grief.
1. A poor, wayfaring Man of grief
Hath often crossed me on my way,
Who sued so humbly for relief
That I could never answer nay.
I had not pow’r to ask his name,
Whereto he went, or whence he came;
Yet there was something in his eye
That won my love; I knew not why.
2. Once, when my scanty meal was spread,
He entered; not a word he spake,
Just perishing for want of bread.
I gave him all; he blessed it, brake,
And ate, but gave me part again.
Mine was an angel’s portion then,
For while I fed with eager haste,
The crust was manna to my taste.
3. I spied him where a fountain burst
Clear from the rock; his strength was gone.
The heedless water mocked his thirst;
He heard it, saw it hurrying on.
I ran and raised the suff’rer up;
Thrice from the stream he drained my cup,
Dipped and returned it running o’er;
I drank and never thirsted more.
4. ’Twas night; the floods were out; it blew
A winter hurricane aloof.
I heard his voice abroad and flew
To bid him welcome to my roof.
I warmed and clothed and cheered my guest
And laid him on my couch to rest,
Then made the earth my bed and seemed
In Eden’s garden while I dreamed.
5. Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death,
I found him by the highway side.
I roused his pulse, brought back his breath,
Revived his spirit, and supplied
Wine, oil, refreshment—he was healed.
I had myself a wound concealed,
But from that hour forgot the smart,
And peace bound up my broken heart.
6. In pris’n I saw him next, condemned
To meet a traitor’s doom at morn.
The tide of lying tongues I stemmed,
And honored him ’mid shame and scorn.
My friendship’s utmost zeal to try,
He asked if I for him would die.
The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill,
But my free spirit cried, “I will!”
7. Then in a moment to my view
The stranger started from disguise.
The tokens in his hands I knew;
The Savior stood before mine eyes.
He spake, and my poor name he named,
“Of me thou hast not been ashamed.
These deeds shall thy memorial be;
Fear not, thou didst them unto me.”
Another hymn that I am rather partial to, though not in our Hymnbooks, is “Amazing Grace”.
I Stand All Amazed-
I have always loved that one. I guess it because that is how I feel- Oh it is wonderful that he would care for me enough to Die for me, Oh it is Wonderful Wonderful to me.
Here it is:
1. I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me,
Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me.
I tremble to know that for me he was crucified,
That for me, a sinner, he suffered, he bled and died.
[Chorus]
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me
Enough to die for me!
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!
2. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine,
That he should extend his great love unto such as I,
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.
3. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt!
Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget?
No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat,
Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet.
I think it is just a beautiful representation of His love for us.
Edit**
Look Yoda and I share a favorite hymn-
Mormon Duck- I always think of the Othere side of Heaven when I hear that hymn as well.
AS ward chorister and ward choir director I have so many it really is hard to choose.
But lately its been “Be Still My Soul.”
It just comforts me.
I love all these . . . I guess, my favorite is a hymn that we sang a lot on my mission. It is sung to the tune of a Dvorsak (sp) melody and all about remembering our Heavenly Home. It is Souviens-Toi.
Beautiful. Thanks for the question and to everyone for sharing, lot of spirit here thinking of the hymns.
First is #2 The Spirit of God
very lively and uplifting always fills me with joy.
The second is Onward Christian Soldiers and that has a long story to it.
On Lt Qual on the second day you are given a test called GMK short for general military Knowelege. I asks hundreds of questions on all aspects of the military from dead serious to very trivial ie what fork to use for what at a formal dinner.
One of the Questions was ” Onward Christian Soldiers is the regimental march of what Canadian Unit ” the answer of course is the Chaplin Corps. ( I was the only one to answer it correctly and I thought it was a give away. Then again I had a 98.5 on the test. ) one of the guys since he didn’t have any idea wrote The Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. The Regular Army unit one of our drill instructors was from. The next day he charge into the Barracks and bellowed which one of you Morons said that Onward Christian Soldiers was the March past of the PPCLI. Whole barracks broke up
The National Pipe Majors Course was being run at the same base and my Platoon runner ( I was a platoon commander at the time ) was taking it. I also had my hymnal with me. I wrote out the lyrics for the training platoon and when we went out at evenings had a piper escourt arranged. On morning runs we sang it and when marching. It became the unofficial course march and we even had the base band play it at our graduation . All to PO the DI. I guess this is only funny if you served but he turned beet red every time we did it and everyone else thought we were the most pious officer’s course in history.
Probably the “Spirit of God”. During my freshman year at BYU, I was the chorister and Jay Welch was my accompanist. He had his own little nuances that he added to the music. On our last Sunday together before the end of the school year, we all stood and sang Spirit of God. It was so moving that we were all in tears and I get tearful just thinking about it. It has been my favorite ever since.
My favorite is something I put together from 3 of my favorite hymns — it is sung to I Know That my Redeemer Lives and begins with several verses of A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief, then I Know That My Redeemer Lives and finally, Come Follow Me — I’ll put the words for the verses — they all fit beautifully with the familiar tune of ‘I Know That My Redeemer Lives’.
Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death,
I found him by the highway side.
I roused his pulse, brought back his breath,
Revived his spirit, and supplied
Wine, oil, refreshment — he was healed.
I had myself a wound concealed,
But from that hour forgot the smart,
And peace bound up my broken heart.
In pris’n I saw him next, condemned
To meet a traitor’s doom at morn.
The tide of lying tongues I stemmed,
And honored him ‘mid shame and scorn.
My friendship’s utmost zeal to try,
He asked if I for him would die.
The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill,
But my free spirit cried, “I will!”
Then in a moment to my view
The stranger started from disguise.
The tokens in his hands I knew;
The Savior stood before mine eyes.
He spake and my poor name he named,
“Of me thou hast not been ashamed.
These deeds shall thy memorial be;
Fear not, though didst them unto.”
I know that my Redeemer lives.
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, he lives who once was dead.
He lives, my ever-living Head.
He lives! All glory to his name!
He lives, my Savior, still the same.
Oh sweet the joy this sentence gives:
“I know that my Redeemer lives!”
“Come follow me,” the Savior said.
Then let us in his footsteps tread,
For thus alone can we be one
With God’s own loved, begotten Son.
For thrones, dominions, kingdoms, pow’rs,
And glory great and bliss are ours,
If we, throughout eternity,
Obey his words, “Come, follow me.”
I Stand all Amazed…
“… A soul so rebellious and proud as mine..”
How Gentle God’s Command…
“… I’ll drop my burdens at His feet and and bare a song away.”
“I am a child of God” and the one that say
” If the savior stand beside me, would I do the things I do”
They remind me of who I am, and what I should be doing.
I do not think that i could name just one if fact all of them are my favorite. Some i can name is Come Come ye Saints that means a lot especially since i have been on a handcart trek and had ancestor come across. Families can be together for ever that means a lot so i can see my families someday after they have gone same with God be with you till we meet again. The Spirit of God means a lot. We thank thee o God for a prophet, we are blessed to have a true and living prophet here, I will go where you want to go dear lord, How fur a foundation, A poor wayfaring man of grief, count your many blessing, the Iron Rod I know that my redeemer lives, I stand all amazed. Those are just some of them.
It would have to be All creatures of our God and King
I have two favorites, I will share my favorite verse of each song:
“Praise to the Man”
3. Great is his glory and endless his priesthood.
Ever and ever the keys he will hold.
Faithful and true, he will enter his kingdom,
Crowned in the midst of the prophets of old.
Joseph Smith was truly a man of God. I can picture the great council in heaven and I often think of Christ speaking with Joseph about what ‘his’ mission on earth would be – like Joseph is second in command to Christ.
“If You Could Hie to Kolob”
5. There is no end to glory;
There is no end to love;
There is no end to being;
There is no death above.
There is no end to glory;
There is no end to love;
There is no end to being;
There is no death above.
I love that song because it speaks of the future, of how it is going to be – there is no end to all the things that matter.
Mine is I Stand All Amazed
This is the hymn that pulled me out of my depression and kept me from killing myself.
It was Easter Sunday 1997. I had been depressed for most of my life (I have clinical depression) and, even though I had gotten married the year before, I was seriously conteplating suicide. I thought that no one – including my Heavenly Father – loved me or wanted me. That I was a horrible person.
I went to church after not having gone for several months. The lesson in RS was on the atonement. During the lesson, I had a great spiritual experience that litterally changed my life.
They then sang I Stand All Amazed. The words just resonated with me – that Jesus died for ME – because He loved me. O how wonderful!!!!
My life did a 180 in that instant. I went off mt anti-depressant drugs and haven’t gone back. I will never live in the dark again.
A Poor Wayfaring Man has always been my favorite. I love the words and I love the tune.
I’ve got many, but my favorite would be “How firm a foundation” as I sang that during trying times of my mission.
I’ve got a lot of close seconds like Redeemer of Israel.
To the poster below who aren’t LDS, thank you for your kind comments. So often people are critical and harsh, you’re respect is a great show of your character.
#2: the Spirit of God
“A child’s prayer”
One reason that I love this hymn is because during church one Sunday a member of the Mormon Tabernacle choir and his daughter sang it. When they where done almost every one was at tears because of how beautiful it was.
Theres so many good hymns out there. I think my favorite one changes every week depending on what has been happening in my life lately. I love just flipping through the hymn book and reading the words, or picking the notes out on the piano. Its great!
I always loved “Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel.”
I think I just loved using the words “let no one shirk.” LOL
“How Great Thou Art”
It was sung at my Dad’s funeral and it still brings me to tears.
My favorite hymn is on page 284 and called, If You Could Hie to Kolob.” I love both the tune and the message of that hymn. Awesome!
I am not a mormon, but I have mormon friends and have attended their services.
I especially like “Come come ye saints” and “if you could hie to kolob”
I have lots of favorites and most are Primary songs! I also love “I am a Child of God.” Knowing that I am a daughter of God is a great feeling!
The Primary songs are all great – “As I search the holy scriptures,” “Book of Mormon Stories,” and of course “Popcorn popping on the apricot tree.” Many of these I sang when I was a little kid. (We didn’t pop up on “beam” when we sang “Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam.”) Last year’s Sacrament Meeting program had wonderful ones!
It is really hard for me to pick just one because there are alot that I loke but if I had to pick one that touches my soul every time I sing it, I would have to choose How Great Thou Art.
I look at all of his creation and just stand back and praise him for what he has done in my life thus far, but I know that the journey is still a long one ahead of me
I am happy that God is working in your life and I wish you the best of luck in your career
God Bless
~JP
PS……I’m not morman, but I included my favorite hymm anyway……..lol
How Great Thou Art
Mine is my favorite for a very specific reason. “I know that my Redeemer lives” was the very first hymn to which I understood the words as a green missionary in Japan many years ago.
First is #2 The Spirit of God and I Stand all Amazed
It invites Holy Spirit and More memorable with my Love of God
:-`)
My favorites are…
How Great Thou Art
Praise To the Man
I Believe in Christ
The Spirit of God
Now Let Us Rejoice
A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief (mainly because it reminds me of Joseph Smith)
Come, Come Ye Saints
There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today
As Sisters in Zion
And oh so many more!
My favorite hymn would have to be “I Need Thee Every Hour”.
That’s a good one. Back when I was in Young Womens’ group, I always liked “I Walk By Faith”, I think it’s called. Goes something like, “I walk today, a daughter of heavenly parents, designed am I in nature by inheritance”, etc.
