If you have a piano or keyboard, start on a comfortable C (the white key immediately before the two black keys). Sing it and then go up to the fifth white key and back down. Then move up one key and repeat the same process. You can sing “la” or anything like it. When you sing, try to imagine your voice as a valve with air flowing through it, and you can tighten your voice and thereby decrease air flow, or loosen your voice and increase air flow. You want something kind of in the middle. If the air flow is too much, your voice will be very breathy (which is unhealthy) and you will sound like a five year old. If the air flow is too tight, your voice will kind of halt and falter on it’s way out.
If vibrato (the sort of wiggly sound) doesn’t come naturally, don’t force it. If you want to learn it, then you can practice moving your voice up in pitch a tiny bit and back down. As you practice this, speed it up every four notes.
As you practice, remember to sing as if there were an anchor on your stomach that you have to practice bouncing when you change notes. This will allow you to support your voice properly.
Also, practice singing songs you like listening to. Sing with the radio or cd, or mp3 or whatever. Then practice mimicking what you hear the singer doing until you get it right.
Make sure you always warm up before you sing. This will help preserve your voice and increase your range.
