I have always liked ‘Shall We Gather At The River’ as I’ve often heard it sung at funerals on Western films but I can’t remember the tune.
Also the print out has 6 verses and then Refrain. What is the refrain It doesn’t seem to be printed on the list from the hymns on the web.

For my God mothers funeral she chose “you shall go out with joy” as the closing hymn It was amazing…. everyone fell apart, this was her through and through, it left everyone crying, but also smiling, because it was exactly what she wanted.
Not for everyone maybe, but it was lovely.
First and foremost, may I express my deepest sympathy for your loss.
With regards to the hymn, I guess it depends on what you want from the service.
Funerals are sad but don’t have to be depressing or over-somber.
You might want the service to be a joyous occasion, which I believe is always best.
A song I heard played at the funeral of a relative of mine was “Here I am Lord”. She was a religious person and she requested that this be played as she entered the church and to be honest a more fitting Hymn we could not have picked.
As she was brought down the aisle, the song was sung and everybody smiled, it was a beautiful moment.
Your in my thoughts.
Take care.
Honey chose what you know your Mom would love.
Thats a beautiful song :
Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angels he has brought,
With it’s crystal tides forever
Flowing by the throne of God
Yes, we’ll gather at the river.
The beautiful, the beautiful, river.
Gather with the saints at the river,
That flows by the throne of God
Ere we reach the shining river
Lay we every burden down,
Praise our spirits will deliver
And provide our robe and crown.
Yes, we’ll gather at the river.
The beautiful, the beautiful, river.
Gather with the saints at the river,
That flows by the throne of God
Soon we’ll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.
Yes, we’ll gather at the river.
The beautiful, the beautiful, river.
Gather with the saints at the river,
That flows by the throne of God
i am really sorry to hear about your mom. I cant imagine how hard this must be for you. one song i have always liked and i want sung at my funeral is “When i get where im going”
When I get where I’m going
on the far side of the sky.
The first thing that I’m gonna do
Is spread my wings and fly.
I’m gonna land beside a lion,
and run my fingers through his mane.
Or I might find out what it’s like
To ride a drop of rain
(Chorus:)
Yeah when I get where I’m going,
there’ll be only happy tears.
I will shed the sins and struggles,
I have carried all these years.
And I’ll leave my heart wide open,
I will love and have no fear.
Yeah when I get where I’m going,
Don’t cry for me down here.
I’m gonna walk with my grandaddy,
and he’ll match me step for step,
and I’ll tell him how I missed him,
every minute since he left.
Then I’ll hug his neck.
(Chorus)
So much pain and so much darkness,
in this world we stumble through.
All these questions, I can’t answer,
so much work to do.
But when I get where I’m going,
and I see my Maker’s face.
I’ll stand forever in the light,
of His amazing grace.
Yeah when I get where I’m going,
Yeah when I get where I’m going,
there’ll be only happy tears.
Hallelujah!
I will love and have no fear.
When I get where I’m going.
Yeah when I get where I’m going.
I always liked “Jesus, I live to Thee” by Rev. Henry Harbaugh:
THE HANDBOOK TO THE LUTHERAN HYMNAL
(St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1942) p.421
1. Jesus, I live to Thee,
The Loveliest and Best;
My life in Thee, Thy life in me,
In Thy blest love I rest.
2. Jesus, I die to Thee
Whenever death shall come;
To die in Thee is life to me
In my eternal home.
3. Whether to live or die
I know not which is best:
To live in Thee is bliss to me,
To die is endless rest.
4. Living or dying, Lord,
I ask but to be Thine;
My life in Thee, Thy life in me,
Make heaven forever mine.
