I Hate Church But I Have To Go. What Should I Do?
Filed in Category - Old Church Hymns

So basically my mom and my grandma attend this little Lutheran church in my town. It’s super traditional and super BORING. I used to consider myself a Christian but recently I’ve been pulling away from it. I don’t /want/ to pull away from this religion but I’m having trouble figuring certain aspects of it out…
In any case, I also go to a Baptist school and attend Chapel every thursday. I don’t mind these chapel services! For one, I’m with my friends. The other thing is that I can really relate to what the speaker is saying. This is one thing that I don’t get out of the church services at my Lutheran Church. Another thing is that I enjoy singing the songs much more so than the old hymns at the Lutheran church. Everything is aimed towards my age group.
These are some of the many reasons that I don’t enjoy the Lutheran church I’m forced to attend and some of the many reasons I enjoy the Chapel services at my school! I just feel that the sermons at the Lutheran church aren’t aimed towards teens and I therefore get absolutely nothing out of it.
I have explained all of this to my Mother and she says she understands but she still wants me to go to Church with her =.=. She usually tries to make me feel guilty by saying that she wants to “share this experience with me”. I also understand her point of view and it does make me feel bad that I don’t want to go. However I cannot escape the torture that my traditional Lutheran church provides. I understand that many of you will say things along the lines of “You should obey your Mother” or “Suck it up” but that is so incredibly hard to do when Church is such extreme torture. (It’s hot, sticky, sweaty, boring and the chairs are uncomfortable on top of everything else)
What do I do?

I was expecting a whining, annoying little brat who wanted to sleep in instead of go to church. Your question is very refreshing.
I can see your mom’s position. She wants to share with you, and being Lutheran myself, I understand that some people don’t like the music, or the way the services go. Especially older churches with older congregations.
Perhaps you can speak to the pastor and see what is going on for young people like yourself. See if they have other services (some will have a contemporary service at a later time than the traditional service, or a youth program that is held in a different part of the church) that may be more your style. It doesn’t sound like the problem is a belief thing, but a boredom thing. And the church needs to work to not lose good young people like yourself. You may be able to work with the pastor to get something started that will be more enjoyable for you, and for others your age.
Once you have friends in the church, it can help you with enjoying the services more.

This is the normal process of becoming atheistic/agnostic (or at least apathetic). It’s good you’re questioning your beliefs and you should read some atheist books in order to understand both sides and make a judgement for yourself. Becoming atheist/agnostic won’t happen overnight. Often will take at least a year. Just remember, use science and logic when making your decision about whether u believe or not.

I’m not at all religious so I’ll ignore the fact that you’re talking about church lol. Every parent dose this. They all go through this lets guilt trip my children into doing everything I want them to do phase. Honestly this may hurt your feelings and hers a little bit but you need to do what you need to do. Tell her enough is enough and stay home or go someplace else. Don’t be so mean but still make sure she gets the point she will get over it they all do.
