I played the guitar for many years before learning to sing and play at the same time. It took some time and effort before I could do it.
    Using a metronome was helpful.

Some people never do learn to do this….it’s a talent that your born with…..some people can accomplish this with lots of practice….start with songs that you know well and practice that….maybe that’s all you need it practice….try it for about six months and see what you can do, if by that time you still see that your having problems maybe lessons would help !!!!!!!

Just practice. You need to practice playing the song well enough that you don’t have to think about it so you can concentrate on your singing. Eventually, as your guitar skills build up, you’ll be able to play songs with little enough effort to be able to play and sing new songs relatively easily.

slow it down. do it a riff at a time, just go slow until you get the rythm of doing both at once.

It might help to practice a tune you know until your muscle memory develops more. When you can play without thinking about it, you may be able to sing.
However, some people simply can’t play and sing – they seem to use the same part of their brain for both actions.

Try playing songs that you know all the lyrics too, and play them in an uncomplicated tune.

You’re not alone in that department. Famed blues man, B.B. King cannot sing while playing Lucille either. Watch him at the next opportunity. He’ll sing while cradling the Gibson and grin and sweat while playing it.
Many guitarists have the problem of playing and singing simultaneously. I was fortunate to have had no problem with that during my musical career.
Learn the tips of B.B. King and see how he manages his disadvantage.

Simplify the chords as much as possible and start from there. Practice, practice, practice. Even if you aren’t strumming at first, just holding chord positions. Don’t play too hard, but make sure that you know your guitar part so well that you don’t have to think about it. If you can play it with your eyes closed then you’re in a good place.
Maybe start by just speaking your lyrics, and work your way up from there?
There are no magic tricks to this, it’s a matter of dedication.

I find that funny. Can you walk and chew gum at the same time? Seriously maybe it’s because your guitar playing is so sophisticated it takes all your attention. Could that be it? Usually when people sing and play guitar, they just strum simple chords.
