Religion is always a bad topic. For all you know the person who is going to read it is a religion hating athesist and will mark points off in spite.

No it isn’t a bad subject, but you have to make it personal. Tie it into school. Did your religion help you with holding your own in high school. How did it help you or support you with school, peer pressure, school work-being a leader or pushing yourself academically.

It’s pretty bad; you run a big risk.
If you write an essay on your church and what it does to help the community, that’s a good topic. You can talk about the ways you worked with the church, if you did any volunteer work, counseling, camps, etc. Stay away from talking about religion itself. Your grader may have strong opinions on the subject.

You’re right. Not everyone does. And of those who are religious, most will not hold the same views you do.
And, on top of all this, it’s very difficult to say anything about the importance of religion in your life that does not amount to mainly platitudes.
My suggestion would be to stay away from this topic with people you don’t know.
And now for an unsolicited bit of advice: Deciding that you “know” the “truth” places you at odds with attaining a university education. Real education requires an open mind, especially on important subjects. I hope you will keep this in mind as you proceed toward college.
