To learn to sing at home you will need to have a firm resolve to practice and to self tutor yourself. This can be hard or a easy depending on your resources and your willingness to stick to it and be self critical as you go.
Some more general tips as you practice can greatly aid your improving voice however so here are a few you can follow:
Breathing
Good breathing is absolutely essential to good singing. Being able to breath with good form and having absolute control of this will improve your singing greatly. To breath well while singing you need to breath from the Diaphragm which is the area below and underneath your ribcage. Practice breathing from this lower point in your lungs rather than from your chest which we all often do. Make sure when you breath like this you stay on control of the diaphragm muscles when exhaling.
Posture
Having good posture when singing even when just practicing is a very good habit that will aid your breathing techniques. It will also give you more control of your voice and add volume without straining your throat.
Make sure you stand in a relaxed fashion with you legs slightly apart, your shoulder back and but not tense and your head and chin up but not overly so. You should not feel stiff but you should feel upright, balanced, relaxed and poised.
Try standing in front of a mirror and watching yourself as you sing. By changing
Volume
Volume is important when performing and a strong clear voice carries the unique timbre of each person better. When practicing, this is not as important as good technique though. Singing too hard and too loud especially if you may not have perfected your singing or might be straining for high or low notes may damage your throat.
To learn to sing at home you should be taking it easy on the volume, there is no need to yell!
So if you want to learn to sing at home you can get a good start with these basic tips. Other helpful resources that can guide you when practicing to tutor you at your own pace are downloadable singing guides and software.
Well first you would need to get either a keyboard or a tuner with sound on it and practice singing solid notes, and to stop from loosing your breath take a huge breath before singing, do breathing exercises (just slowly and silently inhales and exhales) and don’t sing along to song like on a iPod or actually recorded songs, because you may be hitting the same note, but not in the same octave.
Good luck in your quest for musical knoledge
The key to not losing your breath is to practice breathing excercises. if you keep singing non stop and don’t give yourself a break, then you’ll have troubles with your voice. Finding tone is seeing what kind of songs you are good at. Pick some soft songs, then some upbeat songs, fast or slow, high or low. Experiementing will really help you find your vocal range and what type of genre you would sing best in. I would always try new songs, now I’ve found that I’m good at singing pop/rock songs, because thats where my voice feels the most comfortable. Singing isnt always a natural gift, you have to work at it and you’ll soon get better and better.
Good luck and I believe in you!
For the breathing do breathing exercises such as:
Tension and Release: Take in a lot of air and the curl up into a standing ball or so, tensing all your muscles and then release. This helps relax your muscles.
Sigh: Take in a lot of air without making sound, then sigh by releasing the air and putting your hands in the air and lowering them.
Breathing: Get a metronome ( http://www.metronomeonline.com/ ) and set it to 60 BPM. Make your mouth open as if there is an Oreo between your teeth and your throat open as if there is a golf ball in it and put your hands on your stomach without weaving your fingers together. Breath in Quietly for 4 beats then make your top lip just over your bottom lip and make just a small space between them for air to go out and exhale had hard as you can, while keeping all air until the 4th beat of exhaling. Do this in 4-4(All Days) 4-8(Day 3 and Beyond) 4-12(Day 5 and Beyond) 4-12(Day 10 and Beyond) and so forth until 4-20 stop increasing at 4-20. Make sure you don’t take breaths in the middle of exhaling… Just keep pushing air.
