Don’t Catholic and Methodist churches have modern music at all?

Filed in Category - Modern Hymns

I have been to both. Both have very very traditional old hymns.

Don’t Catholic churches have modern music in their mass?
Or Methodist churches have modern music in their services?

All Christian songs make me feel physically ill. Its like a 2 year old wrote them.
At my school, when other people were singing, i still felt like my classmates were judging me for being there, even though they to had to be there.

Its like watching glee, you feel embarrassed.

Some of the greatest classical music ever written was written for the Catholic Mass. Every old Catholic Church has an organ. More modern Catholic Churches don’t usually have a huge pipe organ, but music of various kinds is still an integral part of the Catholic Mass, a way of giving glory to God. At my Church we usually have 7 or 8 musicians, including guitars, piano, flute, and percussion, and a choir of about 25, and the whole congregation joins in the singing.

Some Catholic Churches use a modern band. It’s typically at the Youth Mass.

It’s usually the more evangelical churches that have worship music during services.

Yes. They’ve started incorporating Lady Gaga as much as they can. A Perfect Circle’s Judith is now the Catholic Church theme song.

No they don’t. They are very traditional religions and have used the same music for centuries. I don’t like the new Christian music. It, in my opinion, makes a mockery of organized religion that’s been around for millenia…

It’s probably the preference of the priest or minister, or of the organist or choir director. If you’ll look at the dates of the authors and composers (usually in small print at the end of the hymn), you’ll probably find that quite a few are still living. In addition, if the churches you know have off-hour services (such as early Sunday morning, or Sunday afternoon or evening), you may find more contemporary music, very likely played on a guitar.)

Yes, the charismatic group of catholics use modern music. But, they also enjoy the traditional gregorian music. Nowadays, more and more catholic church use modern music and they share many songs with the charismatic protestants. GBU

If you want modern music, go to a rock concert or a club. If you want to go to a church in which music plays an important part in the worship, go to a Lutheran or an Episcopal church (or perhaps Catholic: haven’t been to a Catholic service yet, going later this week).

My parish has much modern music. Too much by David Haas and Marty Haugen. I’d personally like more black spiritual music or old Latin stuff.

The churches that have changed the least as far as traditional music is the Episcopal and eastern rite churches.

The Catholic Church has both very old hymns and very new hymns. Most parishes will have a variety of different music genres at different Masses. To hear some modern Catholic music, try: http://www.spiritandsong.com/

    With love in Christ.

Sometimes a relatively new song is used in Catholic liturgies. There are many Catholic songwriters and Christian musicians all over the world. The Mass has been said for two thousand years and the core of what is going on in the Catholic Mass will never change. It was handed to us from Jesus Christ and the Apostles themselves. There is a great role for tradition and traditional music.

There is something reverent and holy about traditional style hymns. Lot’s of ‘christian’ churches set up by men today use all kinds of gimics and the latest music from the Top 40 Pop charts to draw people in. It is kind of like getting people to your car lot with a celebrity and hot dog giveaway. They need something to draw people to the new church because the self appointed minister does not have much going for him/her. No sacred tradition, no history, no track record of leading people to God. They then use cheesiness to draw people in. Yeah, we went to services on Sunday and it was cool, they played Coldplay and the Black Eyed Peas! What did you learn about God and being a better person? Did you worship or feel closer to Christ after hearing the Black Eyed Peas? Uhhhh, nope.

There are some very practical considerations too. Think about the Sunday Catholic Mass. There are babies, teens, newlyweds, middle aged people, retired folks and even the very elderly. You might have an age range of 3 months to nearly one hundred years. Do you pick some contemporary music to accompany the liturgy to appeal to the people who listen to nursery rhyme songs, Miley Cyrus, Coldplay, country tunes, classical, Fleetwood Mac, big band music and Sinatra or ??? You are probably going to alienate some and really fire up a few. It would probably result in confusing most.

There is also very little in the way of contemporary music that would suitable for the sacredness of what happens in the Catholic Mass.

Finally, in Catholic Mass, everyone is there to worship together. With rare exception – EVERYONE should be singing. Does not matter if your voice is not the greatest. Your kid might not have a future in vocal arts – but isn’t her voice just music to your ears? It is that way with God. He wants to hear every one of us do our best to praise Him in prayer and song. Contemporary music is much harder for the general population to sing. Amazing Grace can be belted out by the whole congregation, has a beautiful history, and is something everyone can understand.

I hope this clears some things up. I am speaking for the Catholic side of the question as I am Roman Catholic, but I would assume an average Methodist would totally agree. The same reasoning holds for most.

Good luck and peace be with you.
