Do some (or any) churches sing out of hymn books anymore? If not, Why?

Filed in Category - Hymn Books

In the area of the U.S. where I live, it doesn’t seem that churches are singing out of hymn books anymore. I am curious why. I also am curious as to approximately what year hymn books were not used any more.

Yes, a I have been to a few that still do. The others that haven’t have been more new age and have had Christian rock to sing to instead. I think the only reason people don’t sing to hymn books anymore is because it seems too old-fashioned maybe.

I live in a tiny town in Western PA, and the Methodist church I’ve attended still uses hymnals. In fact, they use three different ones. Unfortunately, they only sing one song per service. :(

I agree with the first to post; young church-goers would be more likely to attend if more modern music is played. That’s too bad, really. The old hymns are just gorgeous.

A lot of churches use the newer “modern” “hymns” such as AWESOME GOD and the like. I have been in a few churches that use an overhead projector to show the words on a scree, or on closed circuit TV. There are simply so many new praise and worship songs coming along that putting them in a book is impractical, as they are out dated almost monthly.

I love the old hymns and can’t get into all the new age Christian music. Alot of country churches still sing out of them here in the Bible belt.

    Yup, my church still does.

In general, churches started abandoning hymnals for praise songs, oh, probably sometime in the seventies, but by the nineties what the norm was had been reversed. Generally, the churches were trying to avoid seeming “stuffy” in order to attract more people, but (in my opinion at least), the cheesiness of modern praise is much more off-putting than any “stuffiness” of using a hymnal.

If you’re looking for a church that uses a hymnal, this site is a locator specifically for churches that do use the traditional liturgy: http://lutheranliturgy.org/

So few do nowadays…it’s sad, really. They sing contemporary music…not old-fashioned hymns. It’s sad….I guess some still do…I have seen only a couple though.
