Congregational Hymn At A Baptist Wedding?

Filed in Category - Baptist Hymn Lyrics

I am Baptist, fiance is Presbyterian. We are getting married at my church (Baptist). We would like to have a hymn sung by the congregation at our wedding. My mom thinks this is not done at Baptist weddings. Any Baptists that had a congregational hymn in their wedding? If so, which?

It’s not usually done at Baptist weddings, but so what. It’s not because we are against singing at weddings. There is nothing wrong with it. It will just be a new idea for a few people.
Some hymns that come to mind are:
    O Perfect Love
There Shall be Showers of Blessings
    Be Thou My Vision
This is a Day of New Beginning
Or you could always go with a standard like Amazing Grace (something most everyone would know)

Honestly, I have never seen it done at Baptist weddings ( and I’ve been to a ton), but I don’t necessarily see why it couldn’t be. Just make sure you ask the pastor to make sure it is okay.
If you/your church/people you are inviting are familiar with it, I think A Beautiful Life would be good. You can’t really pick some complicated with a lot of different parts though, as a lot of people may not be familiar with the song.

Your mom is basically suggesting that you should have a worship service without any congregational participation? I think I’m missing some details here. I cannot imagine a wedding without any hymns. Well I can, but it was a very questionable wedding (odd theology, and odd families involved).
Liturgically speaking, hymns for wedding tend to be in the celebration areas or unity, love areas. “Here I am” is a good one. “Will You Let Me Be Your Servant” is also good, but everyone does that, so perhaps pick something different unless you’re really attached. We’re doing “They’ll know we are Christians”, partially because my fiance and I are from different Christian denominations, and it’s nice to have a song emphasizing the unity of all Christians.

I’ve been to many protestant weddings (including Baptist and Presbyterian as well as many Lutheran!) where a hymn is sung. As long as you provide the words and/or music, it can be done easily. I’ve sung hymns such as “Here In This Place”, “Borning Cry”, “Step By Step”, “Awesome God”, “Christ the Rock”, “Oh Father, All Creating” and “Perfect Love”. I was also at a wedding where we sang “Joy to The World” because it was the bride’s favorite hymn. You can pretty much discuss with the pastor the best part of the ceremony to include a hymn, he will be bale to give you a few ideas.
    Good luck!

LADIES. It is YOUR wedding. It’s not Sunday mass or a Easter or a pope’s blessing! You can do WHATEVER you want for your wedding in ANY facility. Trouble is, most of these venues dare to dictate what you can and can’t do. Music, photographers, lighting, blah blah blah. I’m still amazed that the vast majority of brides just accept this at face value without challenging it. Bottom line? You’re renting a venue for a special event. YOUR special event. Make sure from the first meeting that they understand YOU are in charge. Play whatever music you want. Place your photographers wherever you want, including up on the podium area discretely behind something. Use flash photography during the ceremony (pausing out of courtesy during a prayer of course). Get my points?

If it is your wedding, do what you like. Your mother is married already, hopefully.
