Atheists: Do You Have A Favorite Hymn?

Filed in Category - Favorite Gospel Hymns

If you grew up going to church do you have a favorite hymn? Do you still like religious christmas carols? If so, which ones? Do you like any religious music from religions other than Christianity? (Even if you didn’t go to church as a youth feel free to answer)

Gather Us In, was one of my favorites, as was Lord of the Dance, an old Quaker hymn.
Gather Us In has this one line, “Not in the dark of buildings confining, not in some Heaven lightyears away…” that to this day sends a shiver down my spine to hear.
Lord of the Dance just always seemed so wonderfully upbeat, and filled with such metaphor that it really spoke to me.
As far as non-Christian, I can’t really say I’ve been exposed to much, though I do like some of the music that is associated with Shaolin temples.

congregation, please be seated and open your prayer
    guides to
    the book
    of revelations, psalm 69
And now it’s time for us
to us to give a little love back to God
    drinking the blood of jesus
drinking it right from his veins
learning to swim in the ocean
learning to prowl in his name
    psalm 69
the invisible piss of the holy ghost
    comes down like acid rain
they’re making a profit off terminal guilt
    the scavengers go on parade

Of course ! Abide With Me is a favourite though most hymns sung in churches sound so mournful that I find it hard to keep awake ! I believe in the christian way of life ! I just don’t believe in god , Religion would be fine if you left god out of it !!!
    Cheers Pete

i’ll be honest, i actually quite like the sound of alot of the darker more gothic sounding english hymns. I dont listen to the lyrics but the overall feel that the song can produce is amazing.

Yes, I like christmas carols. Its part of our culture.
Whether you believe there is a God or not doesn’t really matter. Xmas is still a nice festival, esp. for children.

I love traditional harvest festival hymns and hymns at Christmas. The music and words are beautiful.
and no, it does not make me want to believe.

yeah I’m a former christian, very much an anti-theist now, but I still like listening to Bob Carlisle, and I like Elvis singing How Great Thou Art and other spirituals.

I love all the Christmas favorites, like Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song”, “White Christmas”, etc.
