Although both the prior answers are technically correct… I can clarify a little…
*typically* the melody is found in the soprano line. This, in a hymn, is the highest note. The soprano line are the notes on the very top and have the lines that are attached to the dot (the lines are called stems) are on the right side of the dot and are towards the top of the piece.
HOWEVER… Sometimes (not in hymns) the melody can be found in other places. If worse comes to worst, play through each voice and see which sounds the most familiar.
Note that I have not mentioned chords. That is because in hymns chords are quite rare.
Well if you know what the song melody sounds like – then play both seperatly – as in the line of notes on the bottom – and see how it sounds – and then the line on the top – however the top line is probably the more likely one!
So yeah my guess is that it is simply the top line that is the melody – because if it is a hymn the top line will be the sopranos part and the bottom the altos. The sops will normally have the melody – and they sing the top part so yeah it will most likely be the top part.
have fun playing your hymn and good luck with learning the melody
It’d be easier if I could see the music, but I’m guessing it’s the top (if the bass cleff has notes too, the right hand could just be playing the ones the left can’t reach that doesn’t include the melody, if that makes sense). Are you sure they aren’t chords/triads? Because if they’re connected by a stem, then they would both be the melody.
The ones with the sticks that point up, probably.
ETA: I’m sorry, was that not clear? The melody is probably the top line, where the sticks on the notes are pointing upwards.
